How Much Does a Mini Split Really Cost?

How many zones and what BTU size?

Number of zones (indoor heads) Each zone is a room or open area with its own indoor head. Outdoor unit shared. Single-zone is cheapest per ton; multi-zone gives flexibility.

Average BTU per zone Pick the typical size per indoor head. Bedrooms usually 6K to 9K BTU, living areas 12K to 18K, great rooms 18K+. Total system BTU = zones × BTU per zone.

System type Cold-climate models (Mitsubishi Hyper Heat, Daikin Aurora, Fujitsu XLTH) cost about 13% more but keep full heating capacity below 5°F. Recommended in cold climates.

Indoor unit mounting Wall-mounted is standard and cheapest. Floor-mount is similar cost. Ceiling cassette and concealed ducted look cleaner but cost 12% to 22% more.

Electrical panel Mini splits typically draw 15 to 30 amps per outdoor unit. If your panel is full, plan on a $2,500 to $4,000 panel upgrade on top of the install.

Mini split per-ton pricing modeled at 0.70x state base for single-zone, scaling to 1.05x at 5+ zones (single-zone is cheaper per ton, multi-zone trends toward central HP cost). Last reviewed 2026-05-10. Range bands ±15% to ±18% from mid.
Sizing rule: Total system BTU = zones × BTU per zone. Typical room sizing: bedrooms 6K to 9K BTU, living areas 12K to 18K BTU, great rooms 18K to 24K BTU. Manual J calculation by your installer is more accurate.
Mini split operating cost: Calculated from current fuel cost using state-aware efficiency ratios. Modern cold-climate mini splits achieve COP 3.0+ even at 5°F; standard models drop to COP 2.0 to 2.5 below freezing. Adjusted for high vs low electricity-rate states.
Federal credit: IRC Section 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit. Ended 31 December 2025 under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (P.L. 119-21). Equipment installed after that date earns no federal credit, so this calculator applies $0. If your install finished in 2025, you can still claim 30% up to $2,000 on your 2025 return.
