Data sources and assumptions
State $/ton: 2024 to 2026 residential HVAC contractor pricing surveys (NEEP, ACCA member data, EnergyStar partner pricing benchmarks). Last reviewed 2026-05-10. Range bands ยฑ15% to ยฑ20% from mid.
Tonnage sizing rule: 1 ton per 600 sq ft moderate climate, 700 sq ft cold climate, 500 sq ft hot-humid climate. Manual J calculation by your installer is more accurate.
Heat pump operating cost: Calculated from current fuel cost using state-aware efficiency ratios (HP COP 2.5 to 3.5 vs gas/oil/propane/electric at typical efficiencies). Adjusted for high vs low electricity-rate states.
Federal credit: IRC Section 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, 30% of installed cost up to $2,000 per year for ENERGY STAR-qualifying heat pumps. Active through 2032, separate from the Section 25D solar credit which ended Dec 31 2025.
State and utility incentives: Per-program data sourced from DSIRE, Mass Save, NYSERDA, Efficiency Maine, NJ Clean Energy, and individual state energy office pages (linked in the panel). Last reviewed 2026-05-10.
What this estimate does not include: ductwork replacement (if needed: $2,500 to $8,000 extra), zoning system add-on ($1,500 to $4,000), smart thermostat upgrade ($200 to $500), removal/disposal of old oil tank or boiler ($500 to $2,500), structural pad or wall mounting ($500 to $1,500).
