How We Make Money
How we make money
Plain English answer to a question most affiliate sites bury or skip. ChooseMyPower earns commissions from companies whose services you can buy through links on this site. Here is exactly how it works, and exactly what we don’t do with the calculators.
Who pays us
When you click through from one of our calculators or articles to a partner like ComparePower, EnergySage, a solar installer, a battery brand, or a financing company, and you become their customer (sign up, request a quote, complete an installation, or buy equipment), they pay us a referral fee. The amount varies by partner. None of these payments come from you.
What we don’t do
- We don’t bias the calculators based on commission. The Effective Rate Decoder will tell you a plan is misleading even if that plan pays us. The Solar Savings calculator will tell a renter that solar isn’t for them, even though we’d earn nothing from that visit.
- We don’t sell your contact information to multiple buyers. When you submit your email or phone, that information goes to one matched provider, not three or five. You’ll see the provider name before they see your phone number.
- We don’t run hidden affiliate links inside articles. Every link to a partner is clearly marked. If you mouse over a button or read a disclosure footer on a calculator, you’ll know it’s a referral.
- We don’t allow advertisers to write or edit our content. Editorial decisions are ours. If a partner stops paying us, they don’t get removed from comparisons. If a competitor we have no deal with offers a better rate, we’ll say so.
What this means for you
You can use any of the calculators and read any of the content without being a customer of anyone. Nothing on this site is a paywall. We’d rather you make an informed choice and decide solar or a different plan isn’t right for you than have you sign up for something you’ll regret in a year and blame us for.
If you do decide to take a partner up on a quote or a plan, we earn a fee. That money keeps the calculators free, the data current, and our team working on the next thing.
Our promise in one sentence
If a calculator’s recommendation would be different without commission, we tell you the version that ignores commission, every time.
